Kwethluk Head Start/Day Care Facility
Kwethluk, Alaska
Prime Consultant: RIM First People
On behalf of Rural Alaska Community Action Program (RurAL CAP), RIM First People recently completed the design for their new Head Start and Day Care facility in the remote Alaskan community of Kwethluk.
RIM completed the full building design and construction drawings for this project on a fast track schedule to ensure that materials could be ordered to meet shipping schedules. Design and engineering activities were done in parallel and with close coordination between members of the design team and other project team members in order to expedite decisions and ensure an appropriate and coordinated design.
In addition, the facility is designed using a structural insulated panel system (SIPs). SIPs are a strong structural system consisting of Perform Guard® Expanded Polystyrene insulation laminated to oriented strand board forming a structural panel. R-Control SIPs were used for the walls, roofs, and floors due to their ability to resist loads caused by wind, snow and seismic activity.
